Obesitity is indirectly the number 1 cause of death in America

July 12th, 2011 admin No comments

It may be America’s No. 1 killer, but people aren’t scared enough of heart disease, says a top U.S. research cardiologist.

“We’ve done a good job of advertising to people that we’re doing better with heart disease, so people tend to sort of feel good about it,” said Dr. Robert Califf, vice chancellor for clinical research at Duke University Medical Center. “We have bypass surgery and stents and drugs that work; the [mortality] rates are declining.”

It’s true that U.S. heart disease deaths overall are down. From 1993 to 2003, cardiovascular disease death rates dropped 22.1 percent.

But more than 910,000 Americans still die of heart disease annually, according to the American Heart Association. And more than 70 million Americans live every day with some form of heart disease, which can include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, angina (chest pain), heart attack and congenital heart defects.

“It’s sort of accepted as part of the background noise, even though it’s far and away the mostly likely reason that you or I will die,” Califf said.

And it will get more likely, he said. “We’re just on the front end of the baby boomer epidemic, where the projections on the amount of cardiovascular disease are climbing steadily over the next 10 years,” he said.

“We’re delaying the disease, but we’re not preventing it,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, president of the American College of Cardiology and chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Prevention is key, the experts agree, and Americans know what to do: Eat a healthy diet, keep their weight in check, exercise and don’t smoke. But instead, obesity and diabetes rates continue to rise. Roughly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. And the epidemic is spreading to teenagers and children.

“We can’t expect significant change until it becomes a cultural mandate,” said Dr. Leslie Cho, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Cardiovascular Center. “When society as a whole makes conscious decisions to eat better and as a default plan be more active, then we’re going to do better.”

But could that happen anytime soon?

“I don’t know,” she said. “If you had asked me if New York City was going to be smokeless, I would have said no a couple of years ago.” The city’s proposed ban on transfat in restaurant food is another potential advance, she said.

P90x Review

Power 90 Extreme, or more popularly known as P90X, is a 90 days rigorous fitness program. The plan works in conjunction with a dietary and nutrition plan and it intended to significantly improve the fitness level in 90 Days. The program was intended to be taken at the home. It was developed by Tony Horton.

P90X system was launched in the year of 2003 and is being provided by Beachbody.

The use of rigirous fitness program is not a new phenomenon. If you are an athelete or you participate in any state level programme, your couch is likely to put you through rigirous traing. What P90X system does it is that – it puts you on a systematic training that helps you in your physical fitness.

The nutrition is a part of the overall plan of the P90X. The ultimate goal is to let user know how proein and carbohydrate affect their bodies. This basically creates the awareness about the protien and the carbohydrate. The plan itself is broken into two parts. During the first part there is emphasis on more protien and less carbohydrate. The plan increases the intake of the carbohydrate in the second stage. The third stage becomes essentially a diet that is more intended for the atheletes diet. In this phase the deit becomes more carbohydrate based.

The P90X program is sold as a set of 12 DVD instruction suite.

You should notice that P90X plan to take the best of the east and west by combining yoga and strethching with strength traing, cadio and polymetrics. But this is not all of it. The P90X has a nutrition guide alongwith a fitness plan. The supplied DVD contains Horton as instructor. The DVD also have several fitness models who show how to do a particular execise.

The total programme cost is $119.85. When you purchase it, initially you are charged $39.95. You are provided a DVD. If you like to continue the programme, you are supplied with more DVD and additional charge is made.

The P90X is not for the beginners. It is for you if you want to really buid a body like professional. There are several positive reviews floating around the website. Readers are advised to be cautious about these, as some of these are written by the beachbody promoters themselves. The program will work, but it will also depend upon your drive. The DVDs and the instruction will definitely help. But it is you who are going to make it successful. And your drive is less, it is not clear how P90X DVD is going to help.

The set of the 12 DVDs are as follows

1. Chest & Back – Exercises related to the Chest and the Back.
2. Plyometrics – For Fast powerful movements

Your Diet Coke Problem Is Actually A Problem

June 30th, 2011 admin No comments

Scientists will not rest until they’ve sucked the fun out of even your tamest vices, and now they’ve set their sights on diet sodas.

Two new studies found that diet drinks and artificial sweeteners increase people’s waistlines and increase their risk of diabetes. The new research was presented last week at an American Diabetes Association conference. The first study by doctors at the University of Texas – San Antonio analyzed data from 474 subjects in the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging, or SALSA. The two-decade study includes elderly Mexican Americans and European Americas. From ScienceDaily:

Measures of height, weight, waist circumference and diet soda intake were recorded at SALSA enrollment and at three follow-up exams that took place over the next decade. The average follow-up time was 9.5 years. The researchers compared long-term change in waist circumference for diet soda users versus non-users in all follow-up periods. The results were adjusted for waist circumference, diabetes status, leisure-time physical activity level, neighborhood of residence, age and smoking status at the beginning of each interval, as well as sex, ethnicity and years of education.

Diet soft drink users, as a group, experienced 70 percent greater increases in waist circumference compared with non-users. Frequent users, who said they consumed two or more diet sodas a day, experienced waist circumference increases that were 500 percent greater than those of non-users.

Abdominal fat is a risk factor for several conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The researchers say this finding shows that national campaigns against sugary drinks should emphasize that replacing them with diet soft drinks won’t necessarily make you healthier.

The report doesn’t weigh in on whether a raging Diet Coke addition is preferable to a regular Coke addiction, but it goes on to note that the artificial sweetener aspartame is also bad news if you’re concerned about diabetes. In a related study, a group of mice were fed a high-fat diet including the chemical for three moths. Compared to the control group, the aspartame-consuming mice had elevated fasting glucose levels and equal or diminished insulin levels. Co-author Dr. Gabriel Fernandes explains:

“These results suggest that heavy aspartame exposure might potentially directly contribute to increased blood glucose levels, and thus contribute to the associations observed between diet soda consumption and the risk of diabetes in humans.”

This certainly isn’t the first study to warn that there are risks associated with foods containing artificial sweeteners, but many of us still see diet beverages as neutral when it comes to health because they contain no calories and fat. The truth is the fizzy chemical cocktail can still do a number on your health, and it may be time to rethink your commitment to being comprised of 70% Diet Coke.

Best Weight Loss Diet Tricks

June 29th, 2011 admin No comments

Don’t think exercise is your only option when it comes to losing weight. There’s a trick to losing weight that involves only your diet. Below are some of the best weight loss diet tricks.

In today’s age, we are facing an obesity epidemic. People could certainly stand to lose a few pounds. However, you don’t have to be obese in order to lose weight. All you need is a desire for a leaner body, which many people have. Exercise is a great way to shed pounds from your body. But diet alone can help you accomplish your goals. Here are some of the best weight loss diet tricks that will help you stay slim.

Tips and Tricks

  • Eat less. This is so simple and yet so effective. The easiest way to lose weight is to take in less food than you need. Remember, 1 pound is equal to 3,500 calories. The average person utilizes about 2,000 calories a day (more or less depending on body weight, body type, gender and other factors). Creating a 500 calorie-a-day deficit will let you lose a pound in one week.
  • Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. This will keep you from feeling hungry in between meals and helps you eat less than you normally would.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These are low-calorie, calorie-dense foods. They will keep you full without letting you pack pounds. In addition, they give you the nutrients you need to stay healthy.
  • Replace high-fat items with items that are low in fat. Chances are that you won’t know the difference, at least after the first few times you eat this way. For example, use 2 percent or skim milk instead of full-fat milk. Use spreads made from vegetables oils as opposed to pure butter.
  • Eat slowly. It takes your brain about 20 minutes to realize that it’s full. The faster you eat, the more you will eat.
  • Drink plenty of water. Sure, initially you’ll put on some weight, but you pee it out anyway. So what’s the advantage of drinking water? It keeps you hydrated so you feel full. Sometimes the body can mistake dehydration for hunger. Don’t allow this to happen to you.

Above are the best weight loss diet tricks I have to offer. Now, here are some additional tips and tricks. While the methods below will not allow you to necessarily lose fat, they will allow your body to lose water weight. This will reduce the weight of your body. This is ideal for anyone who wants to shed a few pounds for the sake of a readout on a weighing machine.

  • Eat less carbohydrates. Carbohydrates help you hold in water. If you want less water weight on your body, follow this simple tip
  • Eat less salt. Salt also helps you retain water. Lose the salt and you’ll shed the pounds

Conclusion

Some of the best weight loss diet tricks go hand in hand with certain precautions that must be followed. Always consult with your physician before starting a weight loss program or modifying your diet. Weight loss is much better accomplished as a long process as opposed to something you achieve rapidly.

All forms of weight loss result in the loss of muscle tissue as well. However, rapid weight loss will result in the loss of higher amounts of muscle tissue. Furthermore, bone density is lost during the weight loss process as well. Both of this can be minimized with a protracted weight loss program. Remember that with a more gradual weight loss program, you can have a body that is more toned and lean with a stronger skeletal system than you would if you lost weight quickly. Losing weight slowly makes more sense. It helps shape a leaner you as opposed to creating a smaller version of yourself.

Insanity Workout Review

Insanity Workout Review

Insanity – what a name for a workout program! I can only say that it caught my attention and I did not regret spending my time investigating it, trying it myself, and writing this Insanity Workout Review. I, as a fitness coach, really love the honesty of this program as it doesn’t hide the fact that it is hard, however the results that you can get are definitely worth the effort. And getting great results for hard work doesn’t sound insane at all, does it? Beach Body’s Insanity is a 60-Day Workout Program. In these 60 days you spend 6 days a week exercising for about an hour. This training is not for the beginner, people with joint problems, or the faint of heart. However, it is just perfect for everyone who wants a hard workout that will show great results for the effort you put in. It will help you burn fat, gain fitness and endurance, and feel more confident. What it does not do is bulk up muscles, sorry Mr. Universe.

The Insanity Workout Program was created by Shaun T., an experienced fitness trainer that has a long career in the industry and he definitely put his experience to good use. He assembled a set of 10 Workout DVDs, which all base on a technique called Max Interval Training. What this means is that you really go to your limits without long breaks during the workout and burn a maximum amount of calories this way. This is kind of the hardest cardio training that you can get and an opposite of normal interval training where you have short periods of high intensity and long breaks. Now that you have a general idea of this program, let me continue my Insanity Workout Review with my own experiences, those of my clients and all the details.

Starting off the Insanity Workout Review: What comes in the box?

As I mentioned already there are 10 Workout DVDs in the program that will help you to increase your total body conditioning, but you also get some bonuses. All in all this is a very complete program and you money is well invested. Since I went through this program myself, I can tell you that there was nothing that I missed. The cool thing is that you don’t need to buy a lot of exercise equipment to do the workout. A Yoga matt and a heart rate monitor is all you really need, most of you will probably have this, if this isn’t your first workout program. To give you all of the details, here is a list of everything that is in the package:

10 Workout DVDs

  • Insanity Workout ReviewDig Deeper & Fit Test (30 min) – This is a fitness test that you will do repeatedly to track your results and see how you hard work pays off.
  • Plyometric Cardio Circuit (42 min) – Some calories cardio training that involves lower-body plyometric exercises and that will definitely make you sweat. Used in the first month of the program.
  • Cardio Power & Resistance (40 min) – Training that focuses a bit more on strength in the upper body and muscle definition. Used in the first month of the program.
  • Cardio Recovery & Max Recovery (33 min) – This training will help you recover from the previous harder sessions so that you remain strong for what comes after. Used in the first & second month of the program.
  • Pure Cardio & Cardio Abs (55 min) – An extreme cardio workout that will take your body to the limits. Used in the first month & second month of the program.
  • Core Cardio & Balance (37 min) – This workout will help you take a break in the middle of the program. It will prepare your body for the second month.
  • Max Interval Circuit & Fit Test (86 min) – One of the hardest cardio workouts of the program. It will really take all that you have. Used in the second month of the program.
  • Max Interval Plyo (55 min) – Some even harder plyometric exercises for your legs. Used in the second month of the program.
  • Max Cardio Conditioning & Cardio Abs (65 min) – Another extreme cardio workout that will wear you out and strengthen your body beyond what you thought possible. Used in the second month of the program.
  • Max Recovery (47 min) – Stretching at its finest, it will help your muscles recover to remain strong for the rest of the program. Used in the second month of the program.

What is the Insanity Workout Schedule? How can I fit it into my day?

The average duration of a workout in the Insanity program is 45 minutes on 6 days a week. Depending on what your current level of fitness is, you can choose to do the workout before going to your job or after. Some people need a lot of rest after doing the workout, while others are good to go after 30 minutes. Now I am a fitness coach and I went through the whole program before writing this Insanity Workout Review. I can tell you that I needed about 30 to 45 minutes after each workout to recover.

Regardless of when you do the workout, there are a few things that I recommend. Drink a lot of water over the course of the day and especially when you work out. You are going to sweat a lot and you have to compensate for this. Also, I definitely recommend adjusting your diet. The nutrition guide will help you get the optimal combination of protein, fat and carbohydrates. You don’t want to adjust your diet? The good news is that you don’t have to; you will still see some great results even without doing so.

What are some typical Insanity Workout Results? Can I do it?

The typical results of going through the 60-Day Insanity Workout Program vary a bit. There are, however, a few things that each participant experiences. All of them lose weight, depending on how much overweight you have you will lose more or less, and they all experience a greater level of fitness and self-confidence. This workout is really brutal, but there is nothing that compares to the great feeling of going through it and getting rewarded by a great looking body. I really like the emphasis that Shaun T. puts on tracking results. Your first day starts with measuring where you currently stand and you will repeat this test four more times across the program. So, this is not the only Insanity Workout Review that tells you how hard this program is. Is it only for top athletes? No! The great thing is that you follow every exercise at your own pace. There are no fixed reps in this program. You do as many as you can. What this means is that you always train at your maximum capacity. So the program is great for the mildly trained person and you can do it over and over again, always staying at your maximum capacity and growing each time. It is not uncommon that people go through this program four times or more.
The most important question: Does Insanity Workout Work?

There is only one answer to this question: YES, it works insanely well. It is a very intense workout, but there is nothing that I can complain about. You can clearly see that the creator Shaun T. put a lot of thought into it. He combines warming up with stretching and some very hard cardio exercises. Many people will tell you that they are in the best shape of their lives after completing this program. I heard some people complain about the fact that this program is too hard. What this shows is that they just didn’t follow the instructions properly. The Insanity Workout Program is the first program where I saw the participants on the DVD drop and take a break. The producers didn’t hide this fact for two reasons: First: Even some experienced, trained people don’t make it. And Second: It’s okay to get out of breath, it’s okay to take a break. Just always get to your own limit and push it with every workout. It takes a lot of willpower, but the results are worth it.
Let’s talk about some results: Insanity Workout Before and After

Okay, I told you right in the beginning that I went through this whole program before I wrote this Insanity Workout Review. So let me share my own experiences with you before I tell you about the experience of some of my clients. Since I am a fitness coach it is pretty much my job to be in top shape already, so there wasn’t much about my physical appearance that could change. However, I had to stop my other workout routines and solely focus on this program. It’s just that intense. Remember – you always go to YOUR limits. So don’t let this scare you off. I was able to do all the workouts while staying near my target heart rate. And I am totally amazed by this program, even I could feel the results pretty fast, which shows me that even well-trained people can profit from it. From beginning to end, I could increase my repetitions by about 20 to 30 % for each exercise and many workouts that seemed hard before are now a piece of cake. Some of my clients tried the program together with me. They all lost a few inches around their waist, got a lower body fat percentage, and they all described a greater level of self-confidence and endurance.

Meals or mini meals, which is better?

October 12th, 2010 admin No comments

Many experts suggest that breaking the usual three square meals into several small meals throughout the day will help keep hunger at bay and energy levels high, ultimately leading to a few less pounds on the scale. Hey, it worked for Jennifer Hudson. But a recent study suggests that larger meals might trump mini-meals when it comes to losing weight.

A study from Purdue University in Indiana found that not everyone is satiated when eating smaller meals. “There’s a lot of lay press about eating frequency,” lead author Dr. Heather Leidy told Reuters Health. “These mini-meals everyone is talking about don’t seem to be as beneficial as far as appetite control.” The results have been published in the most recent issue of Obesity.

Dr. Leidy and her team investigated a small group of overweight and obese men and found that participants on a low-calorie, high-protein diet were more satisfied and less hungry when they ate three times a day than they were eating six times a day. All the men were consuming 750 less calories a day than they needed to maintain their current weight, so it’s impressive that hunger wasn’t an issue for them.

So is it time to give up your mini-meals and snacks? Not so fast – everyone’s different and at the end of the day, the best diet is the one that works for you. Do you find yourself ravenous at dinnertime and completely unable to control the urge to eat every last morsel on your already-large plate? Mini-meals might be the right solution for you to help keep your hunger at manageable levels throughout the day. However, if you have a tendency to over-indulge at every meal regardless of your hunger level, treating yourself to six meals a day might be a recipe for disaster. Point is, find what works for you.

Plus, even the researchers are quick to point out that meal frequency isn’t necessarily the most important factor when it comes to weight loss – the amount of protein you’re eating may be more crucial. The study also measured the effect of both high and low protein diets on appetite, and not surprisingly, the high protein diet came out on top. In fact, for the participants on the low protein diet, meal frequency didn’t make a difference at all – they reported feeling more hungry whether they were eating three times a day or six times a day. The study also only looked at a small group of men, and so any results would have to repeated with a much larger sample group to see if it is applicable to the general population.

However, that’s not to say that you should throw out your pasta, potatoes and fruit either – the results don’t support a no-carb approach. “We very clearly want people to know that this is not an Atkins-style diet,” that participants followed, said Dr. Leidy. “You’re still getting an adequate amount of fiber and fruits and vegetables with these diets.”

So whether you’re eating several small meals or three large ones, remember this: Protein and fiber is best for keeping you satisfied and energetic. And if you are a fan of frequent mini-meals, make sure you’re aiming for more of a snack-sized portion than a buffet-caliber feast.

Weight loss drug Meridia pulled from market

October 8th, 2010 admin No comments

Abbott Laboratories has agreed to take its obesity drug Meridia (sibutramine) off the market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.

The company voluntarily withdrew the drug because clinical trial studies showed there was an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who used the drug.

Approximately 8 million people worldwide take the drug, the FDA said, including 100,000 Americans.

The drug had projected sales of $30 million in the U.S. in 2010, Abbott said.

“Meridia’s continued availability is not justified when you compare the very modest weight loss that people achieve on this drug to their risk of heart attack or stroke,” Dr. John Jenkins, M.D., director of the Office of New Drugs in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a conference call Friday. “Physicians are advised to stop prescribing Meridia to their patients and patients should stop taking this medication. Patients should talk to their health care provider about alternative weight loss and weight loss maintenance programs.”

Approved in 1997 for weight loss, the original data on the drug showed that people who took Meridia lost at least 5 percent more of their body weight than people who were on a placebo and relied on diet and exercise alone.

The FDA requested the company withdraw the drug, after reviewing data from a follow-up study known as the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial (SCOUT ). It showed there was a 16 percent increase in the risk of serious heart events, including non-fatal heart attack, non-fatal stroke, and death, in a group of patients given Meridia as opposed to others given a placebo.

“In all its investigation of the drug, the FDA could find not one person whose benefit from the drug outweighed its risk,” said Dr. Gerald Dal Pan, director of the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

The Risk of Weight Loss Surgery

May 29th, 2010 admin No comments

surgery
The desire to lose weight has led many overweight people to undergo risky procedures, in order to lose weight fast. Instead of changing diet and exercising more, a growing segment of the population is extremely obese choose weight loss surgery, however, a decision that cost them a few end their lives.

Bariatric surgery, a procedure that involves the removal of a portion of the stomach to reduce appetite and eliminate weight, is becoming increasingly popular as more people become obese. Over the past 20 years, the rate of obesity among children and adolescents has tripled. Since 2007, the number of people opting for bariatric surgery to deal with their obesity more than doubled.

Dr. Anoop Misra, Director, Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at Fortis Hospital in Delhi, India, notes that the risks associated with bariatric surgerycan be reduced if proper guidelines are followed. However, physicians are increasingly prescribing surgery for people who do not meet the criteria, he says, that puts people in danger.

In India, several people have died in recent years after receiving bariatric surgery. A girl died of a heart attack just a week after his speech while many others died a few months after them. Dr. Misra believes that both patients and their future doctors fail to ascertain properly the risks associated with surgery, causing unnecessary deaths.

New York University Medical Center describes bariatric surgery as an option of last resort when all other options have been tried. According to experts of the Centre, the gastric bypass surgery has a mortality rate per cent of those who choose to undergo it. The Centre recommends to investigate alternative procedures if lifestyle changes do not work, strongly urging those who ultimately decide to go with weight loss surgery to make sure they have considered the high risk nature of the first procedure. In other words, the procedure is extremely risky and patients must choose to receive it at your own risk.

Many people always look at weight loss surgery are simply looking for an easier way to lose weight. While some people have reached a behemoth that surgery may be their only way, many moderately obese people see surgery as a shorthand guide to shrinking their waistlines. For most people, changing their eating habits and regular exercise is still the best way to lose weight and maintain vibrant health.

Lose Weight : The Proper Way

May 28th, 2010 admin No comments

Many people assume that everyone knows the necessary information on how to lose weight correctly, but clearly if you want to read this article, you will realize that there are many facts about fat loss that you have not yet heard. According to the Central Research Institute in Japan, you can reduce the accumulation of body fat by about 10% when you add vinegar to your diet. According to researcher Dr. Kondo, the results were startling. The search result says that we can radically reduce our body fat by adding 15 ml of vinegar only on our diets.

But the committee does not focus only on the vinegar because they believe that there are so many components that help to reduce the accumulation of body fat in our body. The addition of mustard and about 1 tablespoon of chili sauce such as Tabasco will help your body, speeding up the metabolism by about 15% after two hours of having a meal. A component of red pepper is believed to be responsible for these great benefits. So to lose weight is not that big of a problem.

The component of chilli is also responsible in making a very spicy chili sauce and has the capacity to control the appetite. Not only that, the chili is more nutritious and rich in vitamin C than an orange whole. Chilli is also rich in potassium, fiber and vitamin A and many experts believe that the fight against diseases such as cancer and heart problems.
